Mother in Odisha sells baby boy to buy mobile phone, jeans and tops

Mother in Odisha sells baby boy to buy mobile phone, jeans and tops

Jajpur (Odisha), Oct 3: Investigation into the sale of a baby boy by his mother in Odisha's Jajpur district has revealed curious details — the money was used to buy a mobile phone and a pair of jeans among other things.

"Rakhi Patra of Mundamala village who sold her 17 month-old son for Rs 5,000 purchased a new mobile phone, a pair of jeans, few new tops (to go with the jeans) and memory cards for her mobile with the money," Jajpur superintendent of police Deepak Kumar said on Wednesday.

The investigations were conducted when a division bench of Orissa high court took suo moto cognizance of media reports on the sale and directed the police to recover the baby and hand him over to his mother.

Rejecting the mother's claim that she sold the child to meet the legal expenses of her jailed husband, Kumar said her new acquisitions were evidence of the fact that she did not sell her baby boy due to poverty.

She has confessed before us that she had purchased all these items from the money out of the sale of her baby for Rs 5,000 he said adding the goods were seized from her.

The woman refused to take back her son after police handed her the boy after recovering him from Cuttack on Tuesday. We had handed over the baby but to our utter dismay, the mother refused to take him to her custody in the presence of the general public. Later, we handed him over to child welfare committee.

Rakhi, who is 20 years old and a daily wage earner had in association with a rickshaw puller sold her son to Babula Behera on September 17 in Cuttack.

Police rescued the baby boy from Nuapatana village yesterday following the order of high court division bench comprising Chief Justice V Gopala Gowda and Justice BK Mishra on Friday.

Parineeti Chopra Wardrobe Malfunction

New Delhi: One of the perks of being a celebrity is all the media attention, but sometimes it could just backfire, like in the case of starlet Parineeti Chopra. At a special screening for Shirin Farhad, Chopra wore a red clingy dress that ripped from behind.
Although she realised and rushed to cover up within ten minutes of making the appearance, those ten minutes were enough for the paparazzi to capture the slit. The internet was flooded with zoomed in pictures of her behind, and others stories about the most famous wardrobe malfunctions of all time.
Thing is, it could happen to anybody. JK Rowling, author of Lord of The Rings was in an embarrassing situation when the neckline of her dress slid a little too much during one of her readings. Bollywood actresses Kareena Kapoor, Sushmita Sen, Yana Gupta, Mallika Sherawat (amongst many others) have made the most common error of wearing a super-short dress to a press conference, then sitting cross-legged on a higher stage than the photographers.
Hollywood actress Katherine Heigl was in the middle of an acceptance speech when the shoulder strap of her dress snapped. Pop-star Janet Jackson's so-called 'deliberate' expose on prime-time TV in America had the media going berserk while Indian model Carol Gracias' top slipped down while she was walking the ramp.
Our advice to Parineeti - laugh this incident off and thank your stylist for making you wear a dress with an inner lining!

Man arrested for marrying six women in Bihar

Rohtas (Bihar), Aug 29: A man posing as an officer of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) wedded not once or twice, but six times in the last one decade.

Since all the six girls belonged to different places, they had no inkling about his previous dalliances. But one fine evening, lady-luck ran out and the conman was eventually arrested and sent to jail.

Around 10 years back, Vijay Kumar Singh, a native of Noorsarai in Biharsharif, went to his sister’s house in Ramgarh (Jharkhand). There, he fell in love with Nita, a resident of Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh. They tied the knot in March 2002 and had three children.

Three years later, Vijay met Pushpa, a woman constable with the Jharkhand police. Posing as an IB officer, he befriended her. Pushpa fell into Vijay’s trap and the couple married. Later, Vijay convinced her to apply for a bank loan, through which he purchased a car.

In the subsequent years, he married Nitu (from Patratu), Sheela (Ranchi) and Soni (Ranchi).

Vijay also managed to extract a heavy sum as dowry from each of the five families. In March 2012, he took the marital vow for the sixth time when he married Poonam, daughter of a bank employee from Bihar’s Rohtas district.

For the first few months, the couple led a happy conjugal life, as Vijay told his Poonam that he was on a long leave after completion of a mission. But one fine evening, Vijay was caught on the wrong foot when two of his previous wives called him up on his cell phone, making his in-laws suspicious.

As Poonam contacted his previous wives, hell broke loose. An FIR was lodged, following which Vijay was apprehended by the police. “We interrogated him and found that Vijay, posing as an IB officer, had married six girls in the last 10 years. He has been forwarded to jail,” Rohtas SP, Manu Maharaj, told Deccan Herald on Monday.

When the girl turned down his marriage proposal, he posted a fake profile of the girl on the sites and gave her mobile number on it.

Chandigarh cops file case against woman for Facebook posts

Chandigarh: A 22-year-old woman from Chandigarh faces a police case because she posted abusive comments against the city police on its Facebook page.

Henna Bakshi claims her comments did not use foul language. The police disagrees, and has filed a case against her under the Information Technology act for using abusive language. After considerable public outrage, Home Secretary Anil Kumar today said that the police would take "a lenient view" of her case but that "youngsters should be careful and responsible in (their) communication with a government department or official page."

In the comment she posted, Ms Bakshi says that her car was stolen on August 11 and she filed a First Information Report the very next day. When the police were unable to trace her car, she posted what she describes as feedback on the Chandigarh Police's Facebook page.

As a teenager, Ms Bakshi won a national bravery award for helping catch a burglar.

Have sex everyday to keep doctors away

You would have never thought that a kiss could help keeping dental worries at bay or a gratifying sexual act at night make you feel fit and fresh the next morning. But that's what studies across the web claim.

Healthy sex leads to a healthy life. You may have tried copious measures to get that extra glowing skin and shiny hair. You must have also worked out rigorously to achieve that perfect ten figure you've desired. But the key to your mind and heart is fulfilling sex. Even for those who lose their temper or are always in a depressed state of mind, 'sex' can be the solution.

A happy sexual life with your partner not only gets you in shape with better skin texture and silken tresses, it also burns extra calories, keeps you fit, combats asthma, relievesheadache, reduces depression and tranquilises your mind. From make-up experts, hair stylists, sexologists and fitness connoisseurs - there's a common consensus that a vigourous sexual life leads to a healthy life - both physically and emotionally. We get them to share more on this...

There have been several notions stating that 'sex' produces certain hormones that bring happiness, which lead to a fit body and a healthy mind. Shedding some light on this, Dr. Sanjay Chugh, specialist on sexual issues, states, "Sex contributes to general good health. Any sexual intimacy that is enjoyable and pleasurable promotes well being by providing several physical and psychological benefits. It is believed that sex boosts chemicals in the body that protects us against diseases. Research also suggests that sex and masturbation can help ease joint and muscle pain, combat depression, promote heart health and lengthen one's life span."

Dr. Samir Parikh, clinical physiatrist adds, "The basic fact is that a good sex life also means in a larger picture, a good relationship with one's partner and this makes the partner happier, less stressed and by virtue of that physically healthier."

Not just this, sex also accelerates blood circulation and one's basic metabolic rate, which further enhances the well-being of our mind and soul and helps us calm down.

On these emotional benefits, Dr Chugh adds, "A satisfying sexual relationship strengthens the bond between couples, making them feel secure and loved. The feeling of emotional connectedness adds to ones sense of belonging, which in totality helps them achieve a positive physical, psychological and spiritual state that is necessary for one's general health."

Elaborating further, on a scientific angle, Dr Avdesh Sharma, a consultant psychiatrist, and an expert on relationship issues shares, "Sex is a way of bonding at the physical, mental and emotional level and leads to health (including psychological) benefits. If it is used as a mechanical process, it may have limited benefits. There are physiological benefits of positive changes in parameters like pulse, heart rate, reduction in blood pressure (after an increase in B.P. specially if vigourous sex is tried), dilation of blood vessels and capillaries of the skin, leading to a 'glow', burning of a few calories (depending on the duration of the act and vigour), exercising of some of the muscles, thus improving lung capacity (during heavy breathing)."

However, we also need to understand that sexual acts work more in terms of improving resistance, but are not a safe guard or a treatment to illnesses. Any sexual act can neither be used as a treatment nor would it change your stresses of life, which one would need to resolve irrespective.

"The extra edge of sex may be due to the feeling of being wanted, an expression of emotions and certain hormonal and physiological changes that happen as an expression of love for another individual. Unfortunately, the benefits of sexuality are usually quoted out of context and people may look at this as a panacea for everything. But sexuality without emotions have limited value," concludes Dr Avdesh Sharma.

Have sex stay fit: Sex may seem like the safest sport you can take up. It de-stresses you, keeps you rejuvenated, elevates your moods and stretchs, tones and exercises your body muscles.

Expert opinion: Dr Ishi Khosla, clinical nutritionist, Director Whole Foods asserts, "Sexual acts certainly lead to a normal mental well-being and a healthy state of mind. This in turn creates a physically fit body. If there's an ill-health or manifestation of any problem, it would reflect on your outer body."

Dr Samir Parikh adds, "You would still need a balanced lifestyle, which means that if you compare two equals in terms of lifestyle age and other factors as a constant, then it's possible that a sexually active person feels better."

Sex burns extra calories: It is indeed a form of exercise and naturally burns one's calories too.

Expert Opinion: Dr Geetu Amarnani, wellness expert at Kolmet Hospital, opines, "While having sex, the BMP (basic metabolic rate) increases and that ultimately helps in burning the calories, so it's widely believed that one can shed that extra flab through sexual encounters."

Sex for glowing skin and hair: When women make love they produce the hormone oestrogen which makes their hair shine and their skin smooth.

Expert Opinion: Make-up expert Sylvie, also an expert on sexual issues asserts, "As sex helps releasing the extra level of frustration and stress on one's mind and body, so logically it leads to a glow on your face and your skin texture looks better too. Also, hormones in our body are activated at a faster rate than usual during sex, which helps in better blood circulation, adding that extra shine to one's skin and hair."

Sex brings relief from headaches, reduces depression and tranquilises your mind: A satisfying love-making session releases tension that restricts blood vessels in the brain. It brings you out of a depressed state of mind and acts as a tranquilliser.

Expert Opinion: Dr Sanjay Chugh, "The pleasure that is derived from a satisfying sexual act tends to relax one's mind, taking away headache. It releases endorphins into the bloodstream, producing a sense of euphoria and leaving you with a feeling of well-being. Good sex leaves the person feeling relaxed and satisfied thus acting like a tranquiliser."

A kiss to keep dental problems at bay: It is medically accepted that a kiss encourages saliva to wash food from the teeth and lowers the level of the acid that causes decay. It also prevents the build-up of plaque.

Expert Opinion: Dental expert, Dr. Vandana Jyoti opines, "Anything that increases salivation will help in bringing down the acid level, which causes damage to one's teeth. It also prevents cavity. Other than a kiss, chewing gum and more of lemon intake also tend to act in the same manner. But one has to be extra careful, as it might act the other way round, in terms of spreading germs, if either of the two persons involved in a kiss is suffering from a tooth infection.

Village bans listening to music on mobile phones... On pain of being hit with a shoe

19 September 2012

The ‘Talibani’ village panchayats in Uttar Pradesh are getting bolder by the day and issuing ludicrous diktats in the name of dealing with ‘social ills’.

In the latest ‘fatwa’, the panchayat of Ghatampur village in Saharanpur district has decreed that any youth — male or female — spotted listening to music on the mobile phone would be hit with a shoe five times and will also have to pay a fine of `1,500 to the panchayat.
The punishment would be doubled for repeating the “crime”.

Mohammad Ayub, the sarpanch of the Muslim-dominated village, confirmed that the decision was taken at a meeting held at a local mosque
on Monday evening. He claimed it was to “prevent our children from listening to vulgar music” aired by private radio stations.
“While listening to vulgar music on the mobile phone, they not only ignore traffic but also learn many bad things which are dished out by private radio stations.

“These radio stations also help boys and girls in getting connected. We have every right to protect our children from such a culture,” Ayub said.

The panchayat’s diktats are not restricted to music only.

“Obscene MMS on mobile phones is another immoral act which we want to prevent. We have also banned drinking and smoking in the village. Our
daughters and women of the village have been asked to stop going to shops alone.

“We have formed a committee of 12 village elders to ensure that the orders are followed meticulously and a penalty is imposed on those who violate them,” the sarpanch said.

The panchayat’s decision has the villagers’ support. “There was not a single villager who opposed the decision. Even girls are supporting us. Maybe some boys are annoyed, but we will teach them to follow the panchayat’s orders,” Mohammad Salim, a villager, said.

In a message to the administration to stay off the matter, he said: “It is our internal matter and we hope that the administration will respect our sentiment.”

Nazma Bano, a local student, said: “There is no problem in following the instructions. But their decision to beat the youths with shoes sounds a little objectionable. Hope they will rationalise their diktat.”

A helmet that sends SOS on crash!

The brainchild of an India-born chef for top cyclists, a new 'life saver' bike helmet that connects with your phone and alerts emergency services in case of an accident is set to hit the markets soon.
The potentially life saving smartphone app, which can detect a crash and then alert the emergency services, has been designed for bike riders.
The clever application pairs through Bluetooth with a motion detector which is attached to the rider's helmet and senses the crash.
The invention has been created by Oklahoma-based software company ICEdot in the US.
The detector, named the ICEdot Crash Sensor, can even evaluate the severity of the crash depending on the force of the rider's fall, the Daily Mail reported.
Chris Zenthoefer, ICEdot's CEO, said: "The idea came from Biju Thomas, a prominent chef for a lot of top cyclists. He was on a solo ride and crashed and thought if the crash had been any worse, nobody would have know where he was located."
"We were then introduced and it became clear that the pairing of his idea with ICEdot existing technology were a perfect match," Zenthoefer said.
Following an accident the app will prompt the phone to sound an alarm and a countdown, which can be set to between 15 and 60 seconds, is initiated.
If the alarm is not deactivated the app will contact an SOS service and relay vital information.
Using GPS coordinates the device can reveal the user's location and the severity of their condition.
What's more, it can even pass on crucial medical details, for example if the user has diabetes or any allergies.
If the fall is not critical, the crash victim can simply cease the countdown on their phone and cancel the process.
The cost of the motion sensor device, the smartphone app and a one year membership to the ICEdot service is estimated to be about 120 pounds. The device should be on the market in April next year, the daily said.

Voluptuousness & dusky skin make Indian women sexy

Going voluptuous and dusky seems to be the flavour of the season. And that's exactly how Sameera Reddy looks in Prakash Jha's upcoming film, Chakravyuh (starring Abhay Deol,Arjun Rampal, Manoj Bajpayee and Esha Gupta), where she sizzles as a village belle in the item number, Kunda Khol.

Sameera recalls that the filmmaker wanted the song to be glamourous and yet retain the realism of the situation. "The song is shot in the midst of a naxalite camp. And considering the realism in his films, Prakashji said the makeup has to be dusky to ensure the look of a local girl. I was surprised that he wanted the dusky look, because most of the time, we are expected to be on the fairer side. It's voluptuousness and dusky skin that make us, Indian women, sexy. It's a welcome change that this trend of wholesome women has come back and the audience seem to be loving it."
Shooting in a real location in Bhopal added to her performance, feels Sameera. "Unlike other songs, which have extras dressed up as locals, here they were actually locals. The atmosphere was so realistic that it helped me push myself. Nothing had prepared me for that amount of energy, it really tested my stamina," she says. The actress gives all credit to the director. "Even though it's a song, Prakashji was there on the sets, guiding me to give the required expressions. That aggressiveness brought out the rustic essence in the performance," she says.
Calling the song an essential element in the film, Jha says Sameera was the right choice. "Sameera has that look and she's such a good dancer. When I told Ganesh about her, he agreed immediately. And she's done it fabulously. I'm very happy with the song, it's fantastic," he says.
Chakravyuh, produced by Prakash Jha productions, releases October 24.
